Acoustic properties of shared vowels in bilingual Mandarin-English children

چکیده
This study investigates L1-L2 interactions in relatively young Mandarin (L1)-English (L2) bilingual children through comparing their static and dynamic vowel acoustic features with those of age-matched corresponding monolingual children. Two groups of sequential bilingual children aged 5-6 years (one with low proficiency in English and the other with high proficiency in English) were recorded producing a set of words containing the shared vowels /a/, /i/, /u/ in both languages. Age-matched monolingual children only produced the words in their native language. F1 and F2 values were measured at 5 equidistant time locations. It is found that both groups of bilingual children showed distinctive vowel dispersion patterns and dynamic spectral change patterns from those of monolingual children. Low proficiency bilingual children showed an assimilatory process of L1 on L2 and high proficiency bilingual children showed an assimilatory process of L2 on L1.

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملAcoustic features of vowel production in Mandarin speakers of English
English vowel productions were acoustically examined in a group of native Mandarin speakers. The first and second formant frequencies (F1 & F2) of 11 English vowels were examined in the syllable-level productions of 40 Mandarin speakers compared to 40 American English speakers. Results of the comparative acoustic analysis indicated that the Mandarin speakers differed significantly from the Amer...
متن کاملSurmounting the Tower of Babel: Monolingual and bilingual 2-year-olds' understanding of the nature of foreign language words.
Languages function as independent and distinct conventional systems, and so each language uses different words to label the same objects. This study investigated whether 2-year-old children recognize that speakers of their native language and speakers of a foreign language do not share the same knowledge. Two groups of children unfamiliar with Mandarin were tested: monolingual English-learning ...
متن کاملThe acoustic properties of bilingual infant-directed speech.
Does the acoustic input for bilingual infants equal the conjunction of the input heard by monolinguals of each separate language? The present letter tackles this question, focusing on maternal speech addressed to 11-month-old infants, on the cusp of perceptual attunement. The acoustic characteristics of the point vowels /a,i,u/ were measured in the spontaneous infant-directed speech of French-E...
متن کاملSimilar Vowels in L1/L2 Production: Confused or Discerned in Early L2 English Learners with Different Amount of Exposure
The degree of similarity between L1 and L2 sounds is said to be crucial for L1/L2 sound distinction. Similar L1 and L2 sounds, according to the Speech Learning Model (SLM), tend to be undistinguished. Yet, much has been left undetermined of what counts as “similar”. In this study, the relation between phonetic similarity and L1/L2 sound distinction is explored by examining whether different aco...
